Pool Permits and Rules in Aurora

Aurora's Fence Bylaw 6429-22 provides regulations on fencing, types of fences permitted, height, cost-sharing, materials used, variances and pool enclosures. A permit is not required to build or replace a fence unless a pool is being installed. If a pool is being installed, the building department must be contacted to obtain a permit. The maximum height of a fence, hedge, shrub or other vegetation acting as a fence is 2.0 meters, including trim, lattice caps or other decorative material.

A fence can be placed on the property line. The Town of Aurora does not enforce cost sharing for divisional fences, as this is strictly a civil issue between property owners. Fence types permitted under the by-law can be made of wood, chain-link, shrubs and hedges. The Fence By-law does not pertain to swimming pool enclosures.

If a pool is being installed, a pool enclosure permit is required prior to the work starting. Always confirm current rules with the town before starting any pool or fence project.

Pool Season and Water in Aurora

Aurora's water comes from surface water from Lake Ontario and groundwater and is treated with chloramine. The Aurora Drinking Water System is part of an interconnecting system between Aurora, Holland Landing, Queensville, Newmarket and the larger York DWS. The aquifer from which the Aurora wells draw is part of an extensive aquifer known as the Yonge Street Aquifer.

The Town of Aurora does not provide pool filling from fire hydrants and recommends contacting a water hauling contractor or using a garden hose. Aurora is partially situated on the Oak Ridges Moraine and surrounded by the Greenbelt. A large area in the southeastern part of Aurora is designated as protected under Ontario's Greenbelt legislation, which enforces limits on growth.

Residential growth is restricted to the west side of Leslie Street, which saw new developments of detached homes, townhouses, and condominium apartments in the late 2010s. Aurora had a population of 62,057 in the 2021 Census. For pool owners, this means opening time depends on when the ice melts and the ground thaws, usually in late April or May.

Closing time comes before the first hard freeze, often in October. Chloramine in the fill water means testing and balancing after a top-up is important, because chloramine can affect free chlorine readings and water clarity.

What Each Visit Covers

A pool service visit in Aurora covers the basics that keep water clean and equipment running. Free chlorine or salt-cell output should be in the swimming range. pH should be in the mid-7s so sanitizer works and surfaces do not scale. Calcium hardness should be matched to the surface type. Before closing, balance water before the cover goes on.

For liner work, measure length, width, depth, hopper, and corner type. Inspect walls and floor for voids before the new liner goes in. Water is drained, beads released, and the old vinyl comes out without tearing the walls. Floor is raked, walls are patched, and coping bead track is cleaned.

Jovian and Kyle installed our pool last year in South Etobicoke. We have very tight access to the backyard and other pool companies recommend a vinyl pool because of the tight access. We knew we wanted a fiberglass pool and these guys figured it out and got it done with a beautiful Mova Pool. The whole project took no more than 2 weeks. Excellent work with both pool and interlocking. Highly recommend!

Jovian, Kyle, and their team did an outstanding job transforming our outdoor space. It was a major project involving the replacement of interlock, construction of fences, a deck, pergola, and bench, as well as planting and lighting. They worked quickly and efficiently, executing every aspect with exceptional skill and professionalism. Their communication throughout the process was excellent, keeping us informed and confident every step of the way. We couldn't be happier with the results — the craftsmanship and attention to detail truly exceeded our expectations. One of the best testaments to their work is that two of our neighbours have since hired Stone for their own backyard projects!

Thank you so much for making our front yard so inviting, and our backyard one we can now relax and enjoy. Jovian, was amazing to work with on the design, making changes as we requested them, and making suggestions where appropriate. The budget price for the project was fair, and the project came in on budget and ahead of schedule. Professional communications and reliable service. Thanks so much.

Jovian and his team did an amazing job on our backyard patio, clearing out our small deck and replacing it with stone tiles across the width of our house. But he really outdid himself by building a stone bench around 13 feet long from the very basic description I gave him. Seats 6 people and grandkids love to run across the top.

Joe and his team came in and in one week completely transformed the look of our yard. Stone steps and armour stone as well as plantings and a new fence. We get compliments every day from neighbours and those passing by.

Jovian was one of the only contractors that explained to us the proper way of fixing our front stone steps and re-doing our flagstone with a wet lay. After hiring numerous contractors over the years, he was one of the few that I did not have to worry about making sure that the job was done properly, thus alleviating much stress that occurs during projects. He was professional, courteous and work was completed in a timely manner. I would highly recommend his services and will always use Stone Landscaping for anything I need done in the future.
